The Reds had been linked to the Argentine, and he would have been a great signing for the Anfield club. The forward would have gone a long way to resolving the team’s lack of goals. At the very least he would have been an improvement on summer signings Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli in the position, both of whom have struggled since arriving on Merseyside.

However, it now seems that the transfer is very unlikely to happen, or at the very least it will take a lot of work from Liverpool in order to persuade him to leave.

In the aftermath of Napoli’s 1-0 victory over Lazio on Sunday the World Cup finalist proclaimed, “I am happy here, I have a contract here,” when asked about leaving.

On the other hand, were the Serie A giants to fail to qualify for the Champions League, then the former Real Madrid man could well end up changing his mind on whether he wants to stay.
