Manchester United may be about to shelve plans to spend any significant money in the January transfer window as they struggle to bring in three of their top targets, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Red Devils are eyeing up ambitious moves to sign AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman, Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels, and Everton right-back Seamus Coleman.

However, Dortmund look to have ruled out selling their key defender as they fight relegation from the Bundesliga, while Strootman and Coleman currently look too expensive for United.

Roma want around £60m for their Dutch playmaker, while Everton have reportedly asked for £20m to let their Republic of Ireland full-back leave Goodison Park.

Louis van Gaal remains keen on bringing these players to Old Trafford but will hold off any January spending and try again to land them in the summer, with few, if any, signings now expected to come in to the club this winter.
