Arsenal fans are sure to be frustrated with the latest comments of Arsene Wenger, with the Gunners boss remaining adamant his side can cope following another long-term injury to Mathieu Debuchy.

The North London side have been incredibly short in defence this season, having had to contend with a number of freak injuries and long lay-offs to their key personnel at the back.

Right back Debuchy is expected out for around three months after dislocating his right shoulder against Stoke City; whilst the likes of Laurent Koscielny, Kieran Gibbs, Nacho Monreal and Calum Chambers have all spent time on the sidelines so far this campaign.

The recent injury to the France international is set to leave the Gunners with just six fit senior defenders if Wenger fails to reinforce at the back this January, but the Frenchman is adamant his side can contend without new signings.

“We can cope because we have Chambers, Mertesacker, Koscielny,” Wenger said reports ITV Sport.

“But we have now lost Debuchy who can play centre-back, Monreal who can play centre-back and Gibbs has been out too.

“So if we have another injury or two we will struggle. It is risky (not to sign anyone) – too risky.”

Whilst Arsenal have been linked with a host of defensive stars from around the continent, the Gunners do not appear close to making any signings in this area.

“Why have we not signed a defender? We haven’t found one. We are not the only ones working on the case,” Wenger added.

“It is not a supermarket where you go in and buy a defender.

“It is a market that is very restricted. The players who can strengthen the best 10 teams in Europe, you don’t find many and it is the same for everybody.”
