Former Liverpool winger Oussama Assaidi has slammed Kop boss Brendan Rodgers over the manner of his departure from Anfield, claiming that he never got a fair chance to impress at the club.

Earlier this month, the Moroccan completed a £4.7m move to Al Ahli, but left with something of a parting shot, having made just 12 appearances under the Northern Irishman during his time on Merseyside.
“To be honest I never got a fair chance at Liverpool,” he said in the Daily Express. “If you look at the games I played I don’t think I did that bad.
“Liverpool is a big club that tries to buy and buy and buy, but they don’t always buy the right players. They look to big names but big names are not always the thing to look for because the small names are sometimes better.
“But they buy big names for big money and then they have to play them. That’s how it works in Europe, you have to be a bit lucky. I came from a small club in Holland [Heerenveen] and I took a big step to go to Liverpool because they said I was a good player and would get a chance, but I didn’t get the chance.
“I had wanted to join Ajax after Heerenveen, and perhaps after Ajax I could have gone to a bigger club like Liverpool, maybe I made the wrong decision to go to Liverpool early.”
The 26-year-old arrived at Liverpool from Heerenveen in 2012, but barely featured that season. He spent the next 18 months on loan at Stoke City, where despite several impressive performances, he was unable to convince Rodgers to take another chance on him.
His departure will nonetheless go down as solid business for the Reds, who signed the player for just £2.4m, and hence made a healthy profit on someone that barely featured for their first-team.
Assaidi was somewhat hindered during his time at Anfield by the rapid development of Raheem Sterling, who quickly became a stand-out player for the Reds, and ensured the North African star rarely got a chance.
