Liverpool are reportedly ready to step up their interest in Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, having made the French international their first-choice option to put an end to their goalscoring problems, reports the Metro.

The Reds have struggled to find the net on a regular basis so far this season, after losing star strikers Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge – the former having been sold to Barcelona, while the latter has struggled with injuries.

Summer signings Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert have managed just five goals between them in all competitions, while Fabio Borini, who returned from his season-long loan spell with Sunderland, has netted just once.

In contrast, Benzema has scored 14 times so far this season, taking his tally for Madrid to 125 goals in 264 games. However, his record pales in comparison to that of Cristiano Ronaldo, perhaps meaning that the Spanish giants could be open to a surprise sale in the summer.

The 27-year-old has been a target for Brendan Rodgers in the past, with an unsuccessful bid having reportedly been made last summer, but according to the source the Reds are more confident of brokering a £38.1m bid this time around.
