The Frenchman has played one game this season, and also only managed one in the campaign before due to repeated injury problems. Over the last four years he has only appeared 16 times. This has led to fans of the club calling for him to not be offered a new deal with the North London club.

It would appear that Arsene Wenger may finally be coming round to their point of view from comments in his latest press conference. However, he could still stay hanging around if the some kind of fitness ever returns.

“I will have a decision to make about his contract. Diaby hasn’t a mental problem but a problem of injury. He is a player for whom I have great respect. Whenever he returns, he is injured and he goes from zero. He was destroyed by a bad tackle,” the 65-year-old was quoted by the Telegraph.

“The football player needs mobility of his ankle. When your ankle mobility is restricted, you compensate with something else. He suffered from a very bad tackle in Sunderland six or seven years ago. He was the victim of a tackle that was never punished. It has restricted the mobility of his ankle.

“If he comes back, I will keep him. I always believed in him. In football, the most important thing is health.”

The Gunners play their next match against Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup. Mesut Ozil could start the match after returning to full fitness following a knee problem that has kept him out since October. The German hasn’t been missed too much while on the sidelines due to the impressive form of Santi Cazorla.
