Having courted controversy recently with accusations of domestic abuse levelled against her, the USWNT said that the ban derives from “an incident that occurred during the current WNT training camp being held in Carson, California.”

Solo’s husband, former NFL star Jeremy Stevens, was charged with driving under the influence in the early hours of Monday morning with Solo in the passenger seat. The couple were just a few miles from Carson in nearby Manhattan Beach.

An Olympic gold medal winner, Solo will miss the two upcoming games against France and England, but she can apply for reinstatement when her suspension comes to an end.

“I accept and respect the Federation’s decision, and more importantly, I apologize for disappointing my teammates, coaches and the Federation who have always supported me,” Solo said in a statement.

“I think it’s best for me to take a break, decompress from the stress of the last several months, and come back mentally and physically ready to positively contribute to the team.”
