The former Stamford Bridge hero was taken off as a precaution by manager Manuel Pellegrini after feeling a problem in the pre-match warmup of a game City won 2-0 on Wednesday.

Lampard has proven a key player for City since his surprise move to the Etihad Stadium on loan at the start of the season, when he was snapped up by Pellegrini from the club’s MLS franchise side New York City FC.

One of the finest players in Chelsea’s history, Lampard spent most of his career with the Blues prior to his exit in the summer, when he’d looked like calling it a day in the Premier League.

Still, he has shown his worth to City and Pellegrini now hopes he will have the 36-year-old back in time for the Chelsea game, which is a week on Sunday.

Defeat to Arsenal last weekend has severely dented the reigning champions’ title hopes, but a victory away to the current league leaders would surely blow the race wide open again.
