The defender was left out of the La Liga side’s squad to face Levante this weekend which only added fuel to the fire that a deal with the North London side was imminent.

And this latest report by El Periodico Mediterraneo suggests his move is almost finalised after the Brazilian thanked fans as he left training for all their support during his time with the Yellow Submarine.

The Spanish news source also claims that Joel Campbell will definitely be part of the deal that brings Gabriel to the Premier League but did not confirm whether the Costa Rican forward was moving on a short-term loan or permanent transfer.

With Gabriel’s exit almost confirmed, Villarreal are said to be close to signing another Brazilian in his stead; and are hoping to capture Napoli’s 28 year old centre back Henrique.

Arsene Wenger, meanwhile, will be pleased to have finally sign central defensive reinforcements after having to contend with numerous injuries this season and short supply of backups.

It remains to be seen, however, whether the Gunners will be able to wrangle a work-permit for a player who has yet to make any international appearances for Brazil.
