Vlaar was a favourite of then Holland boss Louis van Gaal at this summer’s World Cup and it’s thought the Dutch centre back is on the now Manchester United manager’s shortlist of defensive targets.

However, the Red Devils could be facing competition from the Turkish giants with news source Haber7 claiming Wesley Sneijder has alerted club bosses to the defender’s availability and they are now said to be looking into the possibility of a move with great interest.

Foreign player quotas in Turkey mean if Gala were looking to sign the 29 year old, they would first have to sell but the report suggests the club would be prepared to let former Bolton midfielder Blerim Dzemaili leave in order to accommodate the Villa star.

A knee injury has ruled out any potential move in the January window for Vlaar, according to the Mirror, as the centre back won’t be fit again until the middle of February.

However, with his contract up in the summer it seems there could be a number of suitors chasing his signature on a Bosman deal come the second half of the season, and if Manchester United truly want to sign him they may have to work fast.
