The striker hasn’t played for the Reds since August, and they seem to have missed his goals in the meantime. Fellow forwards Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini, and Rickie Lambert have all been finding it hard to find the back of the net this season. Were he to return it would be a massive boost to the Merseyside club.

The manager said when asked on the England international’s condition, “We will see how he is today. He trained very well on Sunday. We need to make sure he feels ready.”

Rodgers will be hoping that his team can take advantage of a good first leg performance against the Stamford Bridge outfit on Tuesday night. They drew 1-1 at Anfield, and with away goals only counting after extra time there is a real chance that the Northern Irishman could come out with a win.

BBC journalist Ben Smith has also backed up the 42-year-old’s update…
