The only team to have played more long balls are newly-promoted Burnley…It’s official, the statistics prove that despite spending £150m this summer, Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United are a long ball team.

As reported in the Daily Mail, only Premier League new boys Burnley who spent a paltry £8m this season have played more than big spending United.

The stats, provided by Opta, show that Manchester United have attempted 1,696 long passes in 22 games, above QPR, West Bromwich Albion, Leicester City and Hull City who make up the rest of the top six respectively.

Perhaps more worrying for Red Devils fans is that their team has attempted 358 more long balls than this time last season, under David Moyes, showing the style of football has taken a step backward.
