The Red Devils are desperate to keep the stopper at Old Trafford after a superb season, attracting the attention of Spanish giants Real Madrid.

De Gea is entering the last 18 months of his contract, and while the 24-year-old has been offered a new deal worth £120,000-per-week, he is yet to sign a contract extension.

Those wages would have put the former Atletico Madrid star on the same earnings as Manchester City’s Joe Hart – however Man United are now prepared to offer £140,000-a-week.

Van Gaal will hope that the lure of becoming the Premier League’s highest-paid keeper will encourage De Gea to extend his stay in Manchester – and keep him out of reach from Real Madrid.

United will also reportedly insert a £45m release-clause in a new deal to further thwart interest from the La Liga giants.
