Louis van Gaal confirmed the England midfielder will be missing for around four weeks ahead of the Red Devils’ match with Leicester City this weekend.

Whilst it’s hardly been a stellar season for both Carrick or United, the 33 year old had proved to be a vital cog in van Gaal’s changeable side.

The Dutch coach has also confirmed that another United midfielder will also be on the way out of Old Trafford with Darren Fletcher set to leave in the summer and West Ham United a possible destination.

If United fans were hoping they would be involved in some late night transfer deadline day action to replace their outgoing veterans, van Gaal has poured cold water over any possibility of that.

“Every day I read that I am interested in players. I am not interested in players, only selling,” he said, reports Daily Mirror.

“I read every day that I or United are interested in other players. We only have under contract now Victor Valdes. We gave him a chance. We are only selling players, not buying them.”
