The 54-year-old has been given a deadline of just 90 days by HM Revenue and Customs to pay back the massive deficit.

And he now joins the ever growing list of celebrities to be caught out by investing in film funding company Ingenious.

Several high profile members of the scheme, including David and Victoria Beckham, have been given the same 90 day ultimatum to cough up what they owe.

Lineker’s involvement follows quickly on from the news that fellow pundits Danny Murphy and Martin Keown were embroiled in the same scheme.

“He is one of the lucky ones who can actually afford to pay this off. Lots of players are really struggling,” a source claimed.

However, Lineker is said to be one of the best paid stars on TV, and is sitting on a vast personal fortune of around £21m.
