Both Manchester sides are hoping to improve their defensive options ahead of next season. City have conceded two goals in each of their last four games in all competitions, while United have become overly reliant on youngsters Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett,

Manuel Pellegrini has been unimpressed with his side’s defensive performances so far this campaign, despite the arrival of Eliaquim Mangala from Porto in August.

United are still struggling to cope without Rio Ferdiand, Nemanja Vidic and Partrice Evra, who all left last summer. Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw have both come in, but they have still needed consistently excellent performances from David de Gea to keep them moving up the table.

Portuguese defender Pepe is looking for a new challenge after spending seven seasons with Madrid. His first-team place has come under threat in recent months following the emergence of Raphael Varane, and the 31-year-old would rather move than sit on the bench.
