Illarramendi has struggled to make an impact at the Bernabeu since his move to the Spanish capital in July 2013 and the capture of Lucas Silva may well be the death knell to his career at the Spanish giants.

The excellent Sport Witness confirm that whilst Real Madrid were ready to sell the combative midfielder back to his former club Athletic Bilbao the Spanish international had no interest in such a move.

That same source suggests that Liverpool may ask for some advice on such a move from Illara’s former team-mate Xabi Alonso before pushing ahead with a bid.

Illarramendi has started just four La Liga fixtures this season with the likes of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric ahead of the box to box performer and the further arrival of Silva will surely lead to growing interest in a move for the 24 year old.

Liverpool will apparently look to make a move in the summer when of course they will have seen veteran skipper Steven Gerrard leave for the LA Galaxy and as such in need of fresh central midfield options.
