It had been thought that the Blues were in pole position to sign the Colombian and were extremely close to landing the winger. However, the arrival of Los Blancos into the fray may mean that they miss out on the 26-year-old.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side are keen to sign the Serie A ace next summer, and are willing to pay the whole of his £26.8 million release clause in order to do so.

The Stamford Bridge outfit have organised a bid involving Mohamed Salah going to the Italian club because they don’t want to pay this much for the 2014 World Cup star.

Chelsea may not be having the best of luck on the transfer front, but they will be happy with how they have fared during their Premier League campaign.

They are clear at the top of the Premier League by five points and recently held second placed Manchester City to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.
