Ferguson retired in May 2013 after a highly successful 27 years at the club, but United have struggled since his departure.

David Moyes endured a difficult 10-month spell at the helm, whilst Ryan Giggs took over as interim coach before Louis Van Gaal arrived after the World Cup.

And Mendes, who represents a number of players at Old Trafford has suggested that the club have yet to find a suitable replacement for the Scot, though insisting that Ed Woodward is the right man to drive them forward.

“[Woodward is] the right guy to drive Manchester United to find a way to win important trophies,” he said.

“But at the same time, he has just one problem – it’s completely impossible to find someone like Sir Alex Ferguson because he’s a god, he’s a genius and to find a genius is very difficult.

“You have one in England – Jose Mourinho.”
