“I would like to end up in River where I started, but now I have a contract with Barcelona until 2018. And then we’ll have to see if I’ll be able to play at a good level. Those are issues that we cannot force – it never depends solely on want we want ” said Barcelona’s midfielder.

“This year was very positive, because apart from being runner-up in the last World Cup, which is not a small achievement – we also represented our country very well. And personally I had the chance to play in the game I always dreamed of – the World Cup Final” he added.

“I would like to win a title with Argentina in the Copa America in Chile because it is something that not only us as players crave about, but Argentines”.

Mascherano also mentioned he has spoken to many coaches who said to him there is nothing better than being a player, but if he gets the chance he said he would like to test his abilities in the dugout – drawing on the teachings of many managerial greats who he has worked with during his career.

Will he become a manager? Will he retire with River Plate? Only time will tell…
