Jovetic was left out of the boss’ Champions League squad this week in favour of January arrival Wilfried Bony – a move that has now prompted speculation about his long term future at the club.

City have been hit with a number of squad restrictions for breaching Financial Fair Play rules recently, and the Montenegrin international has been unfortunately sacrificed.

But all hope may not be lost, as Pellegrini has challenged the forward to prove his fitness and win back a future with the Premier League title contenders.

“It’s very important now for Stevan to play as many games as he can, to not be injured and have a high performance level whenever he plays,” said the Chilean tactician.

“After the decision we will analyse. Not just Stevan but all of the squad, which ones will continue next season. So I don’t think one thing has any relation with the other.”

Jovetic has failed to get a good run of games under his belt since his arrival from Fiorentina in the summer of 2013, as a series of minor and major injuries have kept him on the sidelines.
