I Would Do It Exactly The Same,” Says Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma After Leg Breaking Challenge

Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma is proud of what he’s achieved, despite any criticism that might come his way…

Despite only being 20-years-old, Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma is already well accustomed to criticism. In November 2013, a reckless challenge against Sochaux left Thomas Guerbert with a double break in his leg and a fractured ankle.

The tackle has attracted almost one million hits on YouTube, while Zouma was forced to offer a humble apology to the midfielder; who has only recently recovered from his lengthy lay-off.

“I was disappointed for the player,” Zouma told the Times. “I hurt him, and I didn’t want to hurt him. I saw his ankle badly damaged in the dressing room, and was sorry for him and his family. I can say sorry again now. I’ve heard he’s playing again, which is good news.

“He plays with my brother at Sochaux and he’s fine now. If I had to make the tackle again I would do it exactly the same. My brother was playing in the same game, and he just told me to stay strong as these things are part of football.

“Maybe if you see it again I didn’t have to make the tackle, but I wanted to take the ball. In the week before against Paris Saint-Germain I made the same tackle against [Edinson] Cavani and took the ball.”

Zouma has featured 14 times for Chelsea so far this season, perhaps most notably in the second-leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final victory over Liverpool where he played an important role in the Blues 1-0 victory.

“I’m very happy and proud because the boss gave me a chance to play and I had to be ready,” Zouma said. “I was ready and I played well so I have to continue. I’m never nervous on the pitch, never.

“The manager spoke to me after the Bradford game about their second goal. It was a throw-in, and I got caught in front of the striker, instead of being behind him. The one player who was left alone scored.”
