Louis van Gaal is keen to strengthen his Old Trafford defence and has been strongly linked with an interest in the former AS Roma man, who has responded to speculation of a move to Man United in a leading fashion.

‘The Premier League is viewed all around the world,’ he told reporters.

‘There is even some children in Brazil who grow up supporting English teams. There have been some discussions with English clubs, but right now I’m with PSG.’

Man United made offers for the Brazilian international on transfer deadline day and with a price-tag of as much as £40m it will certainly take a big fee to land the hugely talented Parc des Princes star.

Laurent Blanc has in the main opted to use David Luiz and Thiago Silva as his first choice central defensive unit and as such the Ligue 1 side may listen to offers for Marquinhos, not least as a big sale could help the French big spenders to adhere to UEFA’s FFP (Financial Fair Play) guidelines, and the PSG man appear to be courting Man United interest.

Van Gaal has seen senior stars Phil Jone and Jonny Evans both struggle for form and could be willing to make the big bid necessary to get his man.
