In a wide ranging interview he also admitted he was not a fan of the weather in Manchester and was struggling with the language barrier.

Perhaps most importantly though, he discussed his Manchester United future, hinting that at the age of 26 he is already thinking about his next club.

“After Manchester I will return to Central” he said. “I have played in two World Cups, won the Champions League with Real Madrid, played for Benfica in Portugal like I always dreamed of and I’m now playing for another big team in Manchester United. After here, I think it’s time to return to Argentina. I certainly hope so”.

Di Maria played for Rosario Central from 2005 to 2007.

When asked about life in England he said “I’m very happy, very happy. People want me a lot and that’s what matters most – their love. I understand little English but I am trying to learn, I’m taking classes. I hope to learn quickly”.

He also said it was God’s will for him to miss the World Cup final, and he held no ill feeling against Madrid for their decision to sell him, saying he needed “a change of air after winning everything [I] could”.

Di Maria has scored just three goals in 19 games for Man Utd this season.
