“He is a technically gifted player with very good MLS experience, and he will provide us with versatility across the midfield,” General Manager Dave Kasper told the Washington Post.

“We believe that Michael has yet to reach his full potential as a professional, and we look forward to working with him.”

The 26 year old has not featured for Cruz Azul since last summer after an internal disagreement. the dispute led to him having his contract terminated by the Mexican side and he has been a free agent since January.

It was understood he was keen on a move to Europe, but when that did not materialise he settled on an MLS switch.

He played 68 times for the Union, often playing in the same eleven as his twin brother Gabriel. Gabriel now plays for Mexican side Chiapas.

DC United kick off their 2015 season with a game at home to Montreal Impact on Saturday 7th March.
