The midfielder’s contract ends in the summer and as a result of his great form this season both Arsenal and Liverpool have shown an interest in signing him. Before this campaign the England international had struggled for a place in the starting XI at the Etihad Stadium and it may be that he wants to go to a club where he will be more of a key player.

“Milner scored a beautiful goal but for us the most important thing is the way he works for 90 minutes. To sign a contract, you need both parties. I repeat, the club want Milner to stay here and Milner has to decide what he wants to do with his future,” Pellegrini said.

The 29-year-old’s importance to the Citizens this season was exemplified by the goal and assist he managed against the Potters on Wednesday. The win kept the Sky Blues in the hunt for the Premier League title, although they are still seven points behind leaders Chelsea.
