He has been suffering considerably in recent weeks with a pesky hamstring injury that he couldn’t fully shake off, and now it looks like the club have decided to let him rest and fully recover.

The 34 year old will have a scan on the injury on Thursday, but the Reds expect their captain to be missing for up to three weeks according to the Guardian.. If their fears are confirmed, he will miss the FA Cup 5th Round game at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace, the Europa League first leg match with Turkish giants Besiktas, and the vital Premier League trip to Southampton a week on Sunday.

It could mean a recall to the starting eleven for Dejan Lovren. The ex Southampton defender has fallen behind Sakho and Can in Liverpool’s defence, but with Lucas also injured Can could move up into his favoured midfield role.

Gerrard will join LA Galaxy on a free transfer in the summer.
