Southampton sit fourth as things stand, despite only winning one of their last three games. They are currently a point better off than Arsenal, while Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are also breathing down their necks.

The Reds visit St. Mary’s Stadium on the final Sunday in February, with Brendan Rodgers’ side unbeaten in the Premier League since mid-December – a game that could have huge implications as to who finishes higher up come the end of the season.

Clyne, who was quoted by the Daily Mail, said: “It is another game we’re looking forward to playing,’ he said. ‘We know Liverpool are a good side. It is going to be another tough test for us, but I am sure if we play like we did (against West Ham) we can go and get the three points we’re looking for.

“If we get the win then we can push for that top four and hopefully we can stay there for the rest of the season. I think teams are coming up against us and making it really difficult for us to play.

“I think they are coming to play counter-attacking football, which means that we have to try and break them down. Yeah, it makes it difficult but we’re up for the challenge.”
