Delph is central to Aston Villa’s future, and claims he can’t see his side getting relegated…

Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph has admitted that relegation never crossed his mind when he penned his new long-term contract recently.

With his previous contract up at the end of the season, the consensus was that the sort after vice-captain would leave on a Bosman to join an elite Premier League club.

However, Delph defied the odds and committed his future to the club, and has this week admitted that if he felt relegation was a possibility then he wouldn’t have signed the new contract.

“When I signed my contract there wasn’t a thought in my mind that relegation was going to happen,” Delph told BBC Sport.

“If that was the case, you’d have argued that I wouldn’t have signed the contract.”

With a new manager recently installed in Tim Sherwood, Delph will be hoping that relegation battles will become a thing of the past.
