Manager Arsene Wenger recently revealed that the Brazilian is unable to speak English, but the former defender doesn’t think that will be problem. He has mentioned how the incredibly successful Thierry Henry also couldn’t understand the language when he first arrived in North London.

Keown said, “There are some key words Gabriel needs to pick up. Lots of foreign players come here and the speed with which they pick it up is phenomenal. Thierry Henry couldn’t speak any English when he came here. Within a week he was having a full conversation.”

He added, “I couldn’t imagine myself in that situation trying to learn French. Other players are different. They don’t understand much, but they understand football and the instructions you give them.”

The 24-year-old made his debut against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup on Sunday. With the Gunners winning the match 2-0 it was a fairly relaxed entry to the team. With both Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in good form it is unlikely that Gabriel will continue in the side when the Premier League resumes.

Arsenal have been playing well lately and find themselves just outside of the top four. They will want to continue their push for Champions League qualification against Crystal Palace next week.
