The 63-year-old has admitted that he is playing Wayne Rooney in central midfield because of a shortage of options in the area. It would seem that he does not rate summer signing Ander Herrera highly enough to put him in the side.

When asked if Rooney was playing in midfield out of necessity, he said, “Of course that’s the case. I’m looking for balance and I need it in midfield. The last games I played with Adnan Januzaj and Ángel di María in the midfield positions.

“Then you need a certain balance for those kind of creative players. So when you have these creative players and you think that [Radamel] Falcao and [Robin] van Persie are also creative, then you have four creative players. Then you have to look for balance in your team.”

Asked if this meant that a creative player was his number one target, he answered, “Yes, of course.”

This revelation could mean that what appear to be much needed defensive reinforcements may not be coming in as soon as some would hope.

The Red Devils may have to rely on David de Gea to continue his amazing form between the sticks if they want to keep their good defensive record going.
