The Spaniard has only just returned from a hamstring injury and he could now be troubled by the flu. He has trained in the build up to the first leg of the tie, but only while heavily wrapped up. Jose Mourinho has also admitted that the London side are not the same without the midfielder in the side and it is expected that he will make a late check up on the player.

The 53-year-old said, “We are a different team with him, I’m not saying or better or worse, I’m saying different. The team grew up from pre-season with him on the team and the team went in a certain direction with a style of play. Without him, we lose some control, some possession, we become the same team, well organised, good in transition.

He added, “But with him, we control the game better, we have more control of the game. We have possession of the ball because of the nature of the style of player he is.”

If the 27-year-old does miss the match it is likely that Ramires will partner Nemanja Matic in central midfield. An injury to John Obi Mikel means that he is unable to take advantage of the situation.
