In his post-match interview, United boss Louis Van Gaal praised his side’s resilience, telling the BBC: “We showed an unbelievable team spirit. We changed the shape and that was the solution. We scored fantastic goals, a little bit lucky also I think. I liked the second goal a lot, we have trained that a lot”.

Scott Laird put the League One side in the 47th minute, but a contentious Ander Herrera equaliser, a Fellaini smash-and-grab, and an equally contentious Wayne Rooney penalty eventually saw the visitors through to the quarter finals.

Fellaini ended the game playing as a striker, with Van Gaal saying the player enjoyed playing in attack. “Marouane Fellaini has a body, he also scores goals. I played him in the position that he wants for the first time but I do not always have a position for him”, he said. Fellaini himself added his sentiments to those of his manager, saying “The manager is the boss but of course I like [playing up front] as I can score a goal”.

United will face Arsenal at Old Trafford in the next round on the weekend of 7th/8th March.
