The on-loan forward didn’t have a single shot in the entire time he was on the pitch, eventually being hauled off and replaced by Ashley Young in the 60th minute – despite United being 1-0 down at the time.

The fact that Wayne Rooney looked far more threatening – managing to distract the keeper for United’s leveller and scoring his team’s third from the spot – will only add to the growing calls for Dutchman Van Gaal to take him out of the midfield and restore him to Utd’s front line.

It’s almost certain that United will look to sign a striker in the summer. Falcao has only scored four times all season in all competitions, just once more than the much-maligned Mario Balotelli, and has failed to replicate anything like the form that saw him regarded as one of Europe’s most lethal finishers whilst at Monaco.

The forward reportedly doesn’t want to stay at Old Trafford. His agent Jorge Mendes attacked Van Gaal last week, claiming that Falcao would’ve been much better under the management of ex-boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
