Reports in the Daily Express claim that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is on the lookout for a new number one stopper, and has set his sights on the Bayer Leverkusen star. Leno has already played an impressive 154 first-team games for the club, despite only being 22.

Summer signing David Ospina has stood in for Szczesny in recent weeks, helping inspire his side’s recent upturn in form, but the Frenchman does not see the 26-year-old as a long-term first choice option.

According to the source, Arsenal have instructed their scouts to watch Leno for the remainder of the season and report back on his progress. The German youth team international has made 27 appearances so far this term, helping his team to sixth place in the league table.

The young goalkeeper could be open to a move, having said at the start of the season: “The foreign option is certainly appealing. A new language, a new culture – that I could definitely even imagine.”
