The 23 year old picked up a knock in last week’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace, but the club medical team had hoped he would have been able to shake the injury off.

That has not been the case, and Dummett now joins Steven Taylor on the treatment table. With youngsters Remie Streete and Kevin Mbabu both on loan at Scottish side Rangers since January, it leaves the Toon with only two available centre backs in the first team squad – Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson.

Newcastle fans are naturally worried. Williamson has long been regarded as a weak link, and has the worst tackling, intercepting, and blocking ratios out of any defender at the club.

It calls into question the wisdom of their transfer window policy and will leave fans concerned that a slide down the table from their current 11th place is somewhat inevitable.
