The former Manchester United defender has claimed that his old club were interested in Matuidi, but simply couldn’t get the deal over the line.

“We wanted to sign him, we were really interested,” he said.

The holding midfielder has now become one of Laurent Blanc’s most important first-team members, with his value likely to have skyrocketed.

During the David Moyes era at Old Trafford, his search, and subsequent failure, to secure a world class midfielder was well documented. With the former Manchester United boss missing out on Toni Kroos, Cesc Fabregas, and Ander Herrera – who is now at Old Trafford, though used sparingly, having started only eight times since joining the club.

The Red Devils failure to secure a midfielder in the Matuidi mould has gone on to hurt them this season as well, with Louis van Gaal being forced to controversially play Wayne Rooney in a more defensive role.
