De Jong’s contract with AC Milan is due to expire in the summer, and an exit from the club is almost certain; it is simply a case of deciding where his future lies – and it seems increasingly likely that Old Trafford will be his destination.

The 30-year-old reportedly demanded a three-year-deal on £50,000 per-week to remain at the San Siro, and unless they qualify for the Champions League, they are unwilling to meet such demands.

With the club languishing mid-table, there hopes of a place in the prestigious European tournament are being diminished.

Louis van Gaal revealed that the club’s main transfer target was a creative midfielder, despite having a plethora of options in the centre of the park, and it seems he is tempted to bring in the fellow Dutchman to add experience to a unsure Manchester United midfield.
