Carrick missed the start of the current season due to injury, but since returning to the first team has been an integral part of van Gaal’s starting XI and is vice-captain to Wayne Rooney.

The 33-year-old’s current deal expires in the summer, but the Dutchman and assistant Ryan Giggs rate the midfielder so highly they do not want to see him depart Old Trafford before 2016.

Carrick earns £130,000-a-week at United and van Gaal is keen to get the Englishman to sign a 12-month extension as soon as possible.

The veteran joined the Red Devils from Tottenham Hotspur back in 2006 for £18.6m and has since won five Premier League titles, one League Cup and the Champions League.
