With their two main goalies, Rais Mbolhi and Andre Blake, both expected to spend a significant chunk of 2015 on international duty in the summer, the Union needed a reliable third option.

Thus, they turned to 22 year old McCarthy, who was USL PRO Rookie of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year in 2014.

“John is a player we know well as we’ve watched his development closely coming out of Philly and last season in USL Pro,” said the club’s technical director Chris Albright.

“He’ll continue to grow as he transitions into MLS and he gives us depth at an important position.”

“It’s a dream come true to sign with my home-town team,” McCarthy added.

“I’m thrilled with the opportunity and am looking forward at having a chance to contribute to such a great organisation”

Philadelphia kick off their 2015 season with a home game against Colorado Rapids on March 7.
