The LFP, which runs the Primera and Segunda divisions of La Liga, has joined the Premier League in denouncing the recommendation made by an FIFA task force to play the 2022 Qatar World Cup during the European winter.

The decision from the task force means that it is extremely likely that the FIFA executive committee will move the dates of tournament when they meet on March 20th. Should they do so, football’s trademark competition will clash with the Christmas period and the time before it in the major European leagues. It could also mean the tournament will be shorter, and involve fewer teams.

The competition is being moved in order to escape the extreme heat in the Middle East during the summer months. The Spanish governing body believes that the competition should be held in May, when it is also cooler but will have less of an effect on European leagues. UEFA have already rubber stamped the move away from its traditional time in June/July.
