The Spaniard has scored five goals in 18 appearances this campaign, but has only started nine of those matches despite his generally good performances.

The 25-year-old will have been disappointed by Louis van Gaal’s insistence that he need a new creative midfielder, a role he was meant to fill when signed in the summer.

However, the former Athletic Bilbao star is still hopeful his time at the club will be successful.

“Paul Scholes is maybe the biggest midfielder in United history,” Herrera was quoted by Goal.

“I want to be Ander Herrera, [but] I want to learn things from Paul Scholes, things from Michael Carrick, things from Wayne Rooney. I wish one day, I can be so important to the fans, but I have to work very, very hard for that.

“But, I am 25 years old, I have to learn a lot from my team-mates, [and] from great players like Paul Scholes and I want to learn.”

The Red Devils have been in poor form recently, and most recently lost to Swansea City to drop in to fourth place in the Premier League.

With Southampton and Liverpool one and two points behind respectively, there will be a close fight for the Champions League qualification places ahead.
