The Germany international, who has spent five years with Madrid, is out of contract at the Bernabeu in the summer, and has been widely tipped for a move to the Premier League when his current deal expires.

The 27-year-old will be expected to fill the central-midfield void left by the Reds’ departing captain Steven Gerrard, who will join LA Galaxy in July.

Khedira has turned down the opportunity to sign a new deal with Carlo Ancelotti’s side, having been knocked down the pecking order by countryman Toni Kroos this season. He has subsequently only made eleven La Liga appearances this term.

Liverpool, who will have to beat off competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United, as well as German club Schalke, can begin contract talks with the German straight away.
