It’s a move he feels could cost him his managerial reputation if it back-fires, especially with the League Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley looming large on Sunday afternoon.

“The problem is, the decision that you take always is about the result you get afterwards. If for this game you make the rotation and you win, you are a genius – and if you change players and lose the final you are a very bad coach” said the Argentinian.

Thursday’s last 32 tie marks Spurs 44th game of an already long season, but with 12 league games remaining they could yet end up playing another 21 times if they make it all the way to the Europa League final in May.

Winger Lamela confirmed the players were finding it tough: “At times it’s difficult because we feel tired. But we have plenty of players and that helps” he said. “Of course it’s difficult but not only for us. I think we have skills in the team to do well.”

Kick off in the Stadio Artemio Franchi is at 6pm UK time.
