With the tie poised on a knife edge, the fans began to grow restless when Mitchell Te Verde was given a controversial red card.

Roma striker Gervinho was subjected to some vile racist abuse from the stands, with projectiles being thrown onto the pitch in his direction.

And things were exasperated enough for the referee to call a halt to proceedings for the evening.

However, once play was resumed Manu raced through the Roma defence to put the hosts level on the night with a well taken strike.

But then, in a dramatic turn of fortune, Rome put themselves ahead through that man Gervinho. The former Arsenal ace latched on to a low cross and couldn’t miss from six yards.
