The 21-year-old defender has joined the MLS’s newest side on a six month loan deal after failing to break into the first team squad at the Etihad since joining the club in 2014.

“First and foremost, I like Shay’s spirit, his mentality, he’s a real competitor,” manager Jason Kreis said to the New York Post after their recent 2-1 friendly loss to Houston Dynamo. “I think he’s very hungry to be a part of what’s going on here. I think he’s very hungry to move his professional career forward.”

Elsewhere, the club also confirmed the signing of 34-year-old midfielder Pablo Alvarez. He is a good friend of David Villa after the two played together for several seasons at the start of their careers for Sporting Gijon.

The club kick off their 2015 season with a trip to Orlando on Sunday 8th March.
