The Argentine, who cost a club-record £59.7m to sign from the Spanish giants, has not looked at his best since the turn of the year, and has often been used out of position by controversial manager Louis van Gaal.
This had led to speculation that Di Maria was unhappy at United, and it now looks to have been confirmed that he has spoken of his regret at joining the club.
Spanish sources claim he has spoken to friends about his difficult time in England, and it is expected that this blow will attract summer interest from Paris Saint-Germain.
