The story has taken another twist today as De Gea himself came out to deny reports of a row, giving Van Gaal his full support in the process.

“Everything that has been written in the press about us not getting on is a lie,” De Gea said to Eurosport. “We both want the best for the club and the team, and the stories are complete lies”

The 24-year-old Spaniard went on to say he was happy and enjoying his football: “I think this is the best period of my career, I am playing the best football that I’ve ever played”.

“I’m really enjoying it at the moment and I’m just trying to improve with every training session and every game that goes by, giving 100 percent and concentrating to the maximum. That’s the way I want to continue.”

Despite that, rumours of a move refuse to die, with most onlookers believing he will be a Real Madrid player by 1st September. The rumours are being fuelled by De Gea’s ongoing reluctance to sign a new deal with the club.
