The 50-year-old insists he has no sympathy for the club’s current situation as they face a relegation battle, with Villa themselves having sent Newcastle down with a 1-0 win back in the 2008/09 season.

Carver feels the reaction of Villa fans that day has left a sour taste in his mouth and that will give him and his side extra motivation when playing them this afternoon.

“It’s funny how things work out in life,” he said.

“The reaction of their fans after the final whistle will never go away. Every time we come up against Aston Villa, that’s in the back of my head.

“How they reacted to the way we got relegated wasn’t nice and it could spur our fans on.

“I wasn’t with the club back then but it really hurt me. I couldn’t speak to anyone for an hour afterwards.”
