The forward missed several chances as the North London club lost 1-3 to the Ligue 1 side in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 encounter. It has left the Gunners with an uphill battle to stay in the competition.

However, his goal against Everton on Sunday appears to have silenced the criticism for now. A strong 2-0 victory has also given hope that Wenger’s side may be able to turn around their European tie when they travel to France in a week and a half.

Speaking after the match the 65-year-old let it be known how happy he was with his charges.

He said: “We had a united team response. The defensive concentration was at a much higher level. We responded with a win. I’m happy because [Giroud] scored a goal and also his work rate was very good today. He’s an important player. We wanted to make the difference too much against Monaco and forgot our basics. Today we came back to those.”
